Over 30 of New York and San Francisco’s top restaurants & retailers are participating…and counting.

We are thrilled to once again celebrate Burgundy Week in 2016!

Restaurants

We have partnered with over 30 sommeliers from New York and San Francisco’s top restaurants in promoting Burgundy during the weeks leading up to La Paulée. Each has designed a Burgundy-centric wine promotion specific to his or her restaurant, with the goal of giving enthusiasts both new and old unique opportunities to discover the endless joys of the region.

Below you will find a list of participating restaurants accompanied by a brief explanation of why these sommeliers are in love with Burgundy, as well as a favorite pairing of theirs. Don’t delay in making your reservations at these restaurants, because their Burgundy Week promotions will conclude, along with La Paulée, on March 5th.

Retail

We are also pleased to announce the participation of select New York and San Francisco retailers in Burgundy Week this year that will be holding in-store Burgundy tastings and various other promotions. Be sure to check out each retailer's program below.

Why do I love Burgundy?
“Longevity, complexity, intensity, minerality, acidity. ”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“I love that Burgundy is so food friendly. With each table typically ordering a wide variety of items from octopus to pasta to lamb, finding a wine that has the versatility to work throughout the entire meal is essential. Over and over, I find myself drawn to white and red Burgundy for that reason. So Burgundy with 'name a food' is one of my favorite pairings. But beyond that - Raveneau Montée de Tonnerre with our Trofie Nere squid ink and shellfish pasta. ”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“Our wine list at Batard is three quarters Burgundy - enough said?”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“Right now Markus is serving a dish of roasted cod with a smoked eggplant purée, roasted peppers, and red wine sauce. It is divine with an older Gevrey-Chambertin, or any hearty-yet-refined red Burgundy. ”
How am I celebrating Burgundy Week?
“The list currently offers 675 selection, almost 375 of which are Burgundies. Older Burgundy with impeccable provenance is a strength of the list, while a hundred or more selections fall at $80 or less. ”

Burgundy is always a focal point, and we will be pouring a few special wines by-the-glass to celebrate La Paulée Burgundy Week.

Why do I love Burgundy?
“In Burgundy, winemakers are working with capricious grapes on immensely complicated geology: they've perfected Pinot Noir after several centuries, alongside Chardonnay in certain sites and in certain years only. The concept of terroir (a combination of soil, slope and climatic conditions) was born there. This is why Pinot Noir and Chardonnay achieve flavors in the Côte d'Or valued as highly as any flavor on earth.”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“Though it’s one of the world’s oldest wine regions, Burgundy is continually evolving, revealing its wines in new ways. Each family has a successor generation ready to innovate or in some cases, return to traditional methods – all in the pursuit of quality. This, plus the fickleness of weather and the grapes, make Burgundy’s wines endlessly fascinating. It’s what makes the search for Burgundy’s best so interesting – the bottles we showcase at Morrell Wine Bar and at our store.”
How am I celebrating Burgundy Week?
“The Morrell Wine Bar will be featuring a selection of Burgundy available by the glass or in tasting size during Burgundy Week. Featured wines may change daily but you can count on seeing many of the biggest names from Roulot to Roumier featured this week.”

“What I love about Burgundy is the soul and artistry behind the wine. Wine to me is a passion and a love. I look for wines that are made by people that have that same kind of thought train as I do when it comes to my work. Wines from Burgundy aren't just something simple and plain, they are eloquent, balanced, refreshing and a joy to open. Each bottle I open imparts a new story to me, and that is the reward to each bottle I open!”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“Burgundy produces wines that are among the most delicious Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Gamays in the world. These grapes act as the voices of the places in which they are grown.  Centuries of work in the vineyards and domaines translate these voices into inimitable expressions of terroir. Good and great Burgundies are wines of rare beauty and unique essence.”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“Currently, Tannin's butter-poached wild cod with crispy potato rosti, roasted cauliflower and cashew gremolata paired with very good Meursault, or an excellent white from the Maconnais. There is a wonderful textural affinity between the dish, which has both richness and crunch, and the power, elegance and definition of top-quality white Burgundy. ”
How am I celebrating Burgundy Week?
“Tannin will offer great wines from Burgundy by the glass, taste and flight. We will offer a special menu featuring classic dishes of Burgundy and some new interpretations paired with wines from Burgundy. ”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“For me, there is Burgundy, and then there is everything else. Burgundy stands unique amongst its peers with a sublime nature that is difficult to define yet fascinating to discover. Burgundy enchants us with its wild spirit and captures our imagination with seemingly infinite possibilities. It sings to us with ‘je ne sais quoi’ as no other wine can. For me, Burgundy is the greatest achievement an elixir can be!”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“Slow roasted free-range chicken with savory herbs served with sautéed kale, cabbage and sweet potatoes was a perfect meal on a cold winter’s evening. The humble Bourgogne Rouge that was served was true perfection, escorting the multitude of flavors and textures with ease and precision, its rustic charm and heart-warming comfort was pure Burgundy magic!”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“The love of great wine is about so many different things, from the pure pleasure of a great glass, to the story of the place or person behind the wine. For me, Burgundy represents possibility. It is for us the pinnacle wine region of the world, but the unknown is as much tied to great Burgundy as the known. Great wine can be found in many wine regions, but in Burgundy we don't look for great wine. We look for magic. It's that search for magic that is so much a part of Burgundy, and the satiating aspect of threading the needle into drinking a perfect bottle, at just the right moment. A day early may not have found it, a day late may have seen it fade away, but when all the infinite variables coalesce and bring forth that rarest and greatest vinous experience, the trials and tribulations of the journey recede into the background like a dream, leaving only silence, smiling faces, and thoughts of a hopeful return. ”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“At home, Red Burgundy and Duck. White Burgundy and Lobster. They are both classic for a reason. My favorite current restaurant pairing is Red Burgundy with David Bouley's famous porcini flan with dungeness crab and black truffle dashi. It's stunningly delicious, just an overload of umami hedonism.”
How am I celebrating Burgundy Week?
“On Saturday March 5, from 2-6 pm, Tribeca Wine Merchants will be holding a guided, complimentary Burgundy tasting. Always one of our most popular Saturday tastings, don't miss this opportunity to taste a series of wines from some of Burgundy's best producers!”

What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“We're a retail shop but also have small, pre-packaged cheeses and meats, bread, chips, nuts, etc. Our favorite pairing is a bottle of Michel Lafarge Passetoutgrains with Trou du Cru cheese--it's washed with marc de Bourgogne, so basically a tiny, stinky Epoisses! ”

Why do I love Burgundy?
“Everyone thinks that Burgundy is for hedge fund billionaires. It's true that Rousseau, DRC and a few other producers are really expensive. But Burgundy is so much more than that. I love all the simple, inexpensive, Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that you find across Burgundy. Usually these aren't in well known villages like Vosne Romanee or Puligny Montrachet, though even there deals can be found. But go to Chablis, Savigny-les-Beaune, St. Aubin, or Mercurey -- just to take a few examples -- and you find Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that is really affordable and that would be the envy of any grower of these grapes anywhere on the planet outside of Burgundy. I love exploring these less-heralded corners of Burgundy and finding amazing values.”
What is my favorite Burgundy pairing?
“I can't think of anything better in life than a slow roasted duck -- the fat rendered so that the skin is nice and crispy -- with a glass of Gevrey Chambertin. Nothing too old that it gets lost in the flavors of the roasted meat, but old enough that it's got all the great complexity of red Burgundy at its peak. I'm thinking something like Latricieries Chambertin 2000 from Domaine Trapet. The 2000s are delicious right now. This wine should be vigorous and glorious and heavenly with duck.”
How am I celebrating Burgundy Week?
“We will host several events and tastings in our tasting rooms as well as offer a rotating selection of specials by the glass for Burgundy, Burgundy wine flights and bottle specials.”
